Charging Alkalines

I wonder if you save money by recharging alkalines. I bought an earlier generation of the Rayovac Renewal recharable alkaline batteries since there was a rebate that came with my TI-83. The charger is limited to Renewal batteries since it contacts the positive terminal on three points around the edge of the battery instead of the nub at the top. This requires that you use aluminum foil to recharge other batteries. I wonder if the newer chargers can recharge plain alkalines.
