Input Devices

This is an old entry which i somehow lost but found again.

May 26th

To date I purchased IBM ViaVoice professional. In the never ending quest to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome, I am trying various keyboards and input method. It first started with the one handed twiddler keyboard. the cool thing about this keyboard is that it only requires one hand and combines and mouse and does not require surface to support the actual unit. Unfortunately the twiddler requires a substantial investment in both cash he as well as time spent learning the keyboard.

The next investment was in the touchstream keyboard from finger works. the best analogy is a star Trek input console. there are two flat touch pad like devices which receives .input. the great thing about these to touch pads is that they double as a mousing surface or more like a touchpad surface you would find on a laptop. these pads are significantly over implemented. They have built-in spells check as well as gestures systems which allow you to move your fingers in a predefined gesture and the issue commands your computer. Integrating the malice with the keyboard saves you time since he did not have to move your hand from the keyboard to the mouse or back to the arrow keys. it takes some getting used to sense the keys to not have ridges around the and it's very easy to get lost in the middle of the touch pad. I found it doesn't replace the mouse for most of your work you do not need to switch from the touchstream keyboard to the mouse.

then there's voice recognition. I served in several products including a IBM's ViaVoice as well as dragons NaturallySpeaking. Unfortunately Dragon NaturallySpeaking is quite high prices weighing in at about six and a $95. IBM does however is much more palatable at a $200. So I'm trying IBM's ViaVoice U.S. The Professional Edition. the benefits of voice dictation seem to outweigh the pains of correcting the text which has been incorrectly transcribed.

Although this is in short, I would make a few recommendations and conclusions based on my personal whims. The touch stream keyboard is quite useful since it does not require hand to switch back and forth from mouse. combine with an optical mouse, the touch stream, after a bit of training, is a pleasure to use. And for the sheer speed of entering English text, voice recognition is quite efficient and useful.
