Approved list for a machine
Monarch Computer listed stuff below. They also have the Intel SRCS14L SATA RAID controller for $289 which would get to use more of the WD 36GB 10KRPM SATA $118 drives. I have to check if the PCI-X 64-bit 66/100 slot can use the SRCS14L's 64-bit 66MHz PCI 2.2 interface. The power supply needs further research but Monarch didn't have any other reasonable options. The video card is a bit more than it needs to be, but I was too lazy to find an intermediate sweet spot. I'd like to also explore some SCSI and SCSI RAID paths, but Tom's Hardware has already put that to rest with their review of RAIDCore SATA. From this base machine, I would later upgrade memory to 8GB or more when the 3200 1GB DIMMs are around. I would also add another CPU. I would also try installing NetBSD and FreeBSD 5.2 when it supports the 64-bit extensions.
